Why you Shouldn’t be Afraid of Pattern & Print Mixing: The Perfect Way to Experiment with Your Closet This Spring!

As someone who has a endless revolving color palette of neutral colors including blacks, greys, creams, and browns in her wardrobe, I figured since the curse on winter is nearly passed us here on the east coast, (fingers crossed) I should start pulling together some outfit trends that I have been eyeing for this upcoming spring season!

As the weather begins to warm up, most of us start to experience sheer excitement and motivation to pull ourselves up and out of winter’s hibernation. It is a time when you purge the old, tired, and warn in excange it for some of the major fashion trends of the year.

Bringing in the new equinox means that the days are longer and the sun is shining brighter! That transition within the solar system should also mean that the same transition should also be considered within your wardrobe as well. While my color palate revolves around neutral and rich dark colors, spring collections tend to assist me in leaning towards animated prints, cuts, patterns and colorful curated clothing compared to fabrics typically worn through fall and winter.

While there are many resources where you can search trends to try for 2019, lets start with the most common and simplest concept to liven up your closet-COLOR.

More specifically, color and print mixing!

Take a moment to think about what colors come to mind when you think of spring fashion? For me it includes various shades of purple, pink, red, green, yellow, and blue. These colors are actually the official colorway for 2019 spring/summer collection according to the NY Fashion Week’s Pantone color chart. With this in mind, I went to a couple of my favorite Goodwill Thrift Stores on the hunt for outfits to fit the occasion.

This will be part of a 3 part series so make sure you come back to keep reading & what looks I put together!

Look 1-Hip Hop & Rhythm & Blues

The first look I put together was a collaboration of 90’s Hip Hop & R&B mixed with the comfort of athleisure. I found these beautiful Adidas blue track pants in the men’s section when I was on my way out of the store. After one glance I knew they needed to be a major part of my spring/summer wardrobe! The colorway including a prominent white side paneling with black trim piping made it the perfect piece to mix and match with your favorite white tee or crop top.

I chose this striped cabbage trim crop top that I happened to score for less than $2! It was on sale for the color of the week (yes!) and already have ideas on to style it with other outfits. Pattern mixing like I’ve done here, is done very subtly and might I add, easily! And that is due to the colors contained within each piece. My track pants and top both include neutral colors and also happen to be of the same color (black & white). However, while I have stripes on the top, it is complimented by the solid color blocking from the pants below.

For shoes, I would have loved to find a nice pair of white chunky sneakers (preferably FILA’s Distrputor’s) to really make this outfit a throwback hit but, my nomad high-top canvas trainers from Bangs Shoes will do just fine! Despite my luck on finding my dream sneakers, I think the leather fanny pack really made up for it and really set the outfit off, making it all come together.

Stay tuned for my next couple posts where I show you more spring outfit inspiration and outfits I’ve put together for you!

In the meantime, what are some of your favorite spring trends you’re excited to try this season?

Good Luck-

xo,

Danielle

My Trick to Finding the Best Pieces While Shopping- The Location will Shock You!

Would you believe this top is actually a size 2X?

Yeah…I couldn’t either!
⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here’s a pro tip: Scanning the return rack saves you 100% of the time and effort than searching the racks one by one. Items left on the ‘go back’ rack are items that have already been plucked because it caught someone’s attention and was worthy enough to try on. And if it caught their attention, it might catch yours as well! Scanning returns eliminates majority of the effort shopping requires, which to me, is a plus ’cause I like to work smarter not harder!

This method has done me well when I’m feeling overwhelmed and just aren’t having much luck. Keep in mind, this trick can work in a regular stores as well! Doing this has landed me this gem & so many others! I encourage you to try this out during your next shopping trip! 🤞🏽

How I Found My New Favorite Thrifted Mom Jeans in the Mens Section

I’ve been in the market for an awesome pair of #momjeans but surprisingly had the hardest time sourcing a pair. Nothing fit me in the women’s section and I almost gave up until I hopped on over to the men’s side and BAM 💥

I came across these light wash relaxed denim by Eddie Bauer & I knew they were made just for me! The trick is to find jeans that are labeled relax / loose fit & tapered leg for it to appropriately accentuate the ‘assets’ … if ya know what I mean.

Oh and this rich tee is also from the men’s section at Forever 21! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Any guesses for how much I spent on this outfit from The Salvation Army?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Fashion, Work Uniform Challenge Aug 2018

FINAL UPDATE: The Next 5 Days (Days 24-31): Creating a Signature Work Uniform [August Challenge]

Hello Beautiful People,

Here is a review of the next 5 days and the conclusion of my August signature work wardrobe! Enjoy!

Day 25-26:

  • It’s the weekend, baaby!

Day 27 (August 27):

  •  Today I actually took a personal day from work to attend a family function. However, I used this time to refresh my clothing after completing laundry and steamed my tops the night before.

Day 28 (August 28):

  • OMG it’s been so humid lately around here! Its the end of August which means that it’s prime swamp weather here in D.C.- THANK goodness I have my lightweight cotton blouse to keep me cool! I paired my outfit with my long sleeveless vest and accessorizing it with a gold double tier tassel necklace. I’ve been loving this combo and has been my go -to the last few weeks!

Day 29 (August 29):

  • Another day, another dollar and a day in my work uniform.

Day 30 (August 30):

  • It’s been so hot that my last couple shirts were beyond repairable with some simple dabs of lemon juice and water lol I had to go through my other shirts because when you’re a sweaty girl, these things happen! Thankfully, today was the last day!

Day 31 (August 31):

  • T E L E W O R K    D A Y!

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Phew! I made it to the end of the month and to the end of my work wardrobe challenge! If I’m being honest, I really did not expect much from this challenge in terms of making it through the entire month while wearing the same  two main articles of clothing to work without :

A. Getting bored of the concept

B. Being exposed  by co-workers that I was wearing the same clothes for 30 days lol

To my surprise, neither of those happened! Besides my co-workers who I told that I would be conducting this challenge everyone else hasn’t noticed or given me so much of a side-eye. Which makes me wonder if I’m really that impressionable, or people HAVE noticed and aren’t willing to speak up.

My original goal of this challenge was to minimize my stress levels that were within my control throughout the day by eliminating possibly one of the most ridiculous decisions that lead me to stress in the morning; choosing what to wear to work. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I walked into my closet with an outfit I PICKED THE NIGHT BEFORE (I was prepared) put it on, and moments before I was ready to leave I CHANGED MY CLOTHES (WHAT?!)

-or-

How many times I swipped through my closet, totally making a disaster of it and ended up wearing the same top/pants that I wore the week before. It was a vicious cycle that included no creativity, no change, but ultimately no gain (besides stress).

So what are my plans after this month? Well- comparing this month to just the month prior, I would say that this challenge has been beneficial to me and has saved me so much time in the a.m.  I think instead of sticking to the same outfit, I think that I am going to create a work capsule for myself that includes 5-7 items (tops & bottoms) that are appropriate to the season within a complimentary color palate. Since fall is my FAVORITE season, I am so excited to see what I can combine in my closet and from the thrift stores [of course] into a chic work attire capsule wardrobe. I hope to post a blog detailing what I choose as well as outfit combinations! (stay tuned).

I am happy to say that this experience has improved my conscience decisions when I am allowed the extra time to select different pieces to accessories and make use of my creativity with what I wear; and the ability it has allowed me to carry that momentum through the rest of my day.

The bigger question is, has my work performance improved? I can confidently say yes! While my job does not involve hella amounts of creativity I am finding ways to navigate old habits of completing my work into more stimulating routines! It’s been a great experience; I can’t wait to do it again!

Would you consider doing a work uniform challenge? What are your thoughts about creating a work wardrobe capsule? Leave your thoughts below!

Danielle
